A New Little Book: In Every Smallest Place

I just posted a new little book over in my shop. You can see it in this section here. It’s called In Every Smallest Place

One day a few weeks ago, I was listening to a recording of Gay Hendricks, and he was talking about love and making your life about love. And he said at one point—why don’t you make your next project about love? I started thinking about this—what could it mean to make my next project about love? I knew he wasn’t necessarily talking about loving a specific person or romantic love, but more about a big wide open love for life. I took my dog out on a walk, and then the idea for this book came into my head—a book about appreciation for all of the small things. The book starts: “Do you know what I love about this world?” And then:

{words: there is beauty in ever smallest place if you look for it.}

The book goes on with words and illustrations about these beautiful things:

{words: left page: like the dark birds flying in formation on a cold white afternoon – right page: and how your heart keeps pumping like some infinite intelligent machine}

{words: left page: and hugs, and laughing so hard you bend in two and begin to cry – right page: and the rockets of your thoughts that can take you anywhere you want to go}

Many more pages follow (21 in all). You can read more about it in my shop, and you can read the words better there (I’ve started to make my blog pictures smaller these days because I realize that some people have smaller computer monitors and it may be easier for them to view smaller pictures).

You may remember seeing a picture from my work on this book the other day, and I had great fun with it. I worked in a good old fashioned way—by cutting and pasting the words and then drawing around them. This made it really fun to play with layouts. This book-making process reminded me again and again how much I love empty space on a page. I think it’s so rich to have lots of white space and try to use it well. I loved sprinkling the words across the pages and making playful images to go with them. I hope it inspires you to look around and appreciate the little things.

I’ve got another book idea in my head now—don’t you love how one project so often leads to another? Happy day to you!
